For many people, summertime means that there is more time to spend outside, what with barbecues, pool parties, and of course the long list of outside chores to be done. But no matter why you are spending time outside, it is important that you take good care of your skin – not only because you want to look good, but so that you can stay healthy. Read on for some summer skin care tips to remember!
Monitor your time in the sun
It seems like by now everyone should know that too much sun is bad, but this is easy to forget when outdoor fun (or yard work) is beckoning. If possible, don’t go outside from the hours of 10 am to 4 pm – this is when the sun is at its harshest. If you do go outside in the middle of the day, don’t forget sunscreen. Experts advise that sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 should be used, and it should be reapplied often throughout the day. You should wear sunscreen even if it is a cloudy day, and you should still cover your skin with pants, a long sleeved shirt, and a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t forget to protect the skin around your eyes (and your eyes, too) with UV-blocking sunglasses.
If you do want to tan your skin, you should stay out in the sun for no more than 20 minutes per day. Remember that any change in your skin color actually means that your skin has been damaged.
Check your skin often
Even if you don’t spend a lot of time in the sun, you should check your skin often for anything irregular that might be a sign of skin cancer, because skin cancer doesn’t just happen after years of exposure to the sun. Contact your doctor if you see something new on your skin or a growth that just doesn’t look right. Skin cancer can be treated very successfully if it is caught early.
