Microneedling is not one single type of treatment. In Mount Pleasant, SC, our team at AesthetiSpa Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center uses both SkinPen® microneedling and Genius™ RF microneedling. Our founder and medical director, Christy L. Cone, MD, is board-certified in Family Medicine and has comprehensive training with radiofrequency devices and nonsurgical skin rejuvenation.
SkinPen Uses Microneedling Alone
SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the skin’s natural repair response and stimulate collagen and elastin. There is no radiofrequency or light energy added.
That straightforward mechanism makes SkinPen useful for people mainly interested in texture and collagen support. It can be a good comparison point if you want microneedling benefits without adding heat-based energy. We use it for fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks. It can also be used beyond the face, including the neck, chest, hands, arms, legs, abdomen, and back.
SkinPen can be used across skin types and colors, although candidacy still depends on your medical and skin history.
Genius Adds Heat Below the Surface
Genius uses microneedles too, but it adds radiofrequency energy in the dermis. That extra energy can be useful when the skin needs more than surface-level texture improvement, particularly when laxity, wrinkles, or deeper scarring are part of the picture.
Because RF energy is delivered beneath the surface, Genius is often compared when skin firmness is an important priority. A typical plan involves three sessions about four weeks apart. Temporary redness can last 24 to 72 hours, and sensitivity may continue for a few days.
If comfort during RF microneedling is one of your questions, our PRO-NOX™ sedation page explains an option that may be discussed for certain cosmetic procedures.
Start With the Change You Want to See
If rough texture, pores, or mild scarring are your main priorities, SkinPen may give us the type of collagen stimulation we are after without adding RF energy. When texture changes appear alongside laxity or deeper scars, Genius may be the technology we compare more closely.
Area, previous procedures, recovery preferences, and skin history all shape the recommendation. We also consider whether firmness or surface texture is the bigger priority when you look in the mirror.
Patients researching post-procedure support can read our article on AnteAGE® Biosomes after laser or microneedling. Our broader skin rejuvenation services show where both microneedling approaches fit.
