Ditch the Peach Fuzz — Dermaplaning

Women have always been envious of men for their ability to exfoliate their face daily. That’s another word for shaving. That’s because exfoliation is the key to younger-looking skin. To show the healthy skin beneath, you need to get rid of the dead skin cells on top.

That’s the idea behind dermaplaning at AesthetiSpa. Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation procedure. We usually advise our patients to also include a light chemical peel afterwards to ensure that the peeling agents penetrate more evenly and deeply once the deep skin and other gunk from the outer skin is scraped away.

Derma what?

People can be confused by the different procedures with “derma” in them. Dermaplaning should not be confused with dermabrasion, however. Dermabrasion is an aggressive skin resurfacing procedure that requires extensive recovery time and we don’t perform that procedure at AesthetiSpa. Dermaplaning, on the other hand, has no recovery time.

We often make our dermaplaning a two-step exfoliation treatment. In the first step one of our estheticians takes a sterile surgical blade held at a 45% angle and gently passes it over the top layer of the skin. This removes the dead skin cells and the “peach fuzz” hair that all women hate. If the patient has requested to add the peel, a light chemical peel is then applied to the skin. This second step isn’t required, but we believe that combining the two procedures allows deeper penetration that softens fine lines and uneven pigment, and encourages the body with the cell turnover that is key to younger-looking skin. The entire procedure takes only 45 minutes.

It has to be painful, right?

Many people are concerned that dermaplaning will hurt. Actually, running the 10-gauge blade lightly over the skin at a 45% angle is basically the same thing men do every day when they shave. You won’t need any topical numbing cream or anything. The peel will create a light tingling sensation, but it isn’t painful.

Downtime?

Many resurfacing procedures have some downtime, but not dermaplaning. Your skin will likely have a pink appearance, but that passes within a few hours. There may be some light tightening and flaking of your skin, but that is gone within two days.

If you have a big event coming up, dermaplaning is a great way to give your skin a radiant glow. There isn’t any limit on the number of times you can have dermaplaning performed. It’s a good monthly exfoliation.
