Address Your Spider Veins Now for Next Spring

With our toasty springs and summers in South Carolina, shorts and skirts are the clothing of choice, not to mention swimsuits. But who wants to put on a swimsuit when their legs have little purple and blue squiggly lines coursing about on the skin?

Annoying spider veins. Not painful, but ugly.

Now is the perfect time for the team at AesthetiSpa to take care of those spider veins. That way, the spiders will be gone, your body can finish off the closed off veins, and you’ll be ready to show off your legs when the warm weather returns. We usually use sclerotherapy for spider veins, although we can use laser therapy, as well.

What causes spider veins?

Our veins are tasked with returning de-oxygenated blood to the heart. In the legs, the veins have a real fight with gravity, uphill the entire way. As we age, the strength of the support tissues and even of the veins themselves can diminish. This can cause the blood to back up and pool in spots. This shows itself in spider and varicose veins. Because spider veins are just below the surface of the skin they are very visible.

How do we get rid of spider veins?

Sclerotherapy is nothing new. It was first used in the 1930s to make unwanted veins close up and go away. We use both lasers and sclerotherapy, but find sclerotherapy the most effective on the legs. Lasers can be great for spider veins on the face.

In sclerotherapy, your registered nurse injects a special saline solution directly into the vein in question. This solution irritates the vein (much like that uncle from Georgia who visits every year during the holidays irritates you!), causing the walls to shrink up and the vein to close off. Over the next two to three months, the body gradually absorbs the unused vein, making it disappear or become dramatically less visible. Any blood that ran through the vein is routed to an adjacent vein.

What happens afterward?

If we treated a number of spider veins, we will likely put you in a pair of compression stockings for one to two weeks afterwards. You’ll wear these during waking hours. This compression improves your results so most veins need only one injection to disappear.

Winter is the time to get rid of your spider veins. Call the team at AesthetiSpa, 843-849-9925, to make your appointment.
