Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have the power to diminish fine lines, wrinkles and damaged skin from prolonged sun exposure. They are also wonderfully effective at treating acne. Unlike cosmetic peels you might purchase in the store or experience at a day spa, chemical skin peels have the ability to go deeper, below the skin’s surface, and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, as well as new, healthier skin cells. At AesthetiSpa, we offer a wide variety of chemical peels, so treatment is tailored to your skin’s specific needs.

Who Can Benefit From Chemical Peels?

Superficial chemical (acid) peels can be performed on all skin types with good results. There are a few people who are ineligible for peels based on their past medical history and/or allergic reactions they have. Chemical peels should not be done on persons with a known history of skin disorders that are associated with skin hypersensitivity. Additionally, anyone who has an allergy to a component of the peel, or who is not willing to comply with the prescribed home care instructions after a peel, should not undergo this procedure.

What Can Chemical Peels Do For Me?

  • Improve the tone and texture of the skin
  • Improve fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve hyperpigmented areas
  • Correct sun damage
  • Improve mild scarring
  • Successfully treat some common skin conditions, e.g. sun spots, melasma, acne, rosacea

What Can I Expect From My Experience?

Shortly after the application of the peeling agent, most people experience a transient stinging sensation. This sensation is usually mild, but can be more intense with some of the stronger solutions. Each person is different and will have a unique experience. The use of a small, handheld fan during the peel really helps most people to feel quite comfortable throughout the treatment. After the peel, most people experience some mild to moderate redness for 4-24 hours. Within 3 days or so, there is usually some mild to moderate flaking of the skin, depending on the type and strength of the acid used. Most people experience the best results in a series of 6-12 treatments.

How Long Does A Chemical Peel Treatment Take?

Chemical peel treatment may take half an hour or less. This depends on the type of peel that is performed. Deeper peels can sometimes take approximately 45 minutes. Superficial peels may take only a few. This is the beauty of chemical peel treatment; it is customized to the individual. During your consultation, your provider will carefully evaluate your skin, your concerns, and your medical history as it pertains to skin irritation and allergic reactions to topical products. With this information, the perfect chemical peel can be chosen for you.

How Long Will My Chemical Peel Treatment Results Last?

The results of a chemical peel may last up to several months depending on several factors. Results typically last longer when a medium peel is performed or when a series of superficial chemical peels is conducted. Light chemical peels may be performed as often as every month. Though it takes longer to see significant improvements from a light peel, the treatment is quick and has little to no downtime during which the skin reddens and flakes.

In addition to the type of peel you get, your habits will also influence how long your results last. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, smoke, or are not consistent with a quality skin care regimen, your results may not last as long as they could. Your provider can discuss ways in which you can make the most of your chemical peel treatments.

What Should I Avoid After A Chemical Peel Treatment?

After a chemical peel, you should follow the aftercare instructions provided by our office. General guidelines after this treatment include:

  • Avoid sun exposure.
  • Wear a broad-spectrum, SPF 30 sunscreen even if it is cloudy.
  • Wash the skin gently using the hands or a very soft cloth.
  • Avoid exfoliating the skin for one to two weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid over-moisturizing the skin. This could slow cellular turnover.

Can I Shower After A Chemical Peel?

During the first 24 hours after a chemical peel, you should avoid getting the skin wet. Showering can wet the skin through its fine spray. Additionally, exercising and excessive heat should be avoided for 24 hours to give the chemical peel time to work on sloughing off the superficial layer of skin cells.

Is There Any Downtime After A Chemical Peel Treatment?

Superficial chemical peels rarely incur downtime. Most people who get this treatment can go about their day as usual. However, because redness is a potential side effect, you may want to schedule your first peel when you can go home immediately after your appointment. While the purpose of a chemical peel is to help old, damaged skin cells fall away from the epidermis, the flaking that results from this procedure is typically mild enough to avoid interrupting your normal activities.

Are Chemical Peels Painful?

Chemical peel treatment is not painful. Shortly after the carefully-formulated solution is applied to the skin, you may feel a slight tingling, itching, or stinging sensation. The solutions used for superficial chemical peels are so mild that they can be appropriate for sensitive and acne-prone skin. Many people report feeling nothing at all while getting their peel. The most common side effects of a peel include persistent redness, skin sensitivity, and minor skin irritation.

These are usually short-lived. A less common side effect can be hyperpigmentation, but even this is usually transient. It is very important that all persons undergoing a peel closely follow the post-peel instructions given to them at the time they leave the office. This will greatly minimize any chance of experiencing the side effects.
