What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a medical technique for removing the topmost layer of skin, leaving it supple and vibrant. A special wand removes this layer by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips. At the same time, it vacuums the dead skin cells away in a sterile and controlled manner. Removing this outer layer of skin leaves a smoother texture and promotes new cell growth.

What Skin Issues Does Microdermabrasion Address?

At AesthetiSpa, we use DiamondTome microdermabrasion for a variety of skin problems. Microdermabrasion can:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Remove sun-damaged skin
  • Reduce age spots
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Improve acne and acne scars
  • Reduce enlarged pores

Benefits Of DiamondTome Skin Resurfacing

The DiamondTome skin resurfacing system does not use crystals or other loose abrasives with adverse effects. It also does not contaminate the patient or the environment.

The DiamondTome system is a wonderful alternative to chemical peels because it is noninvasive and nonsurgical and requires no downtime after treatment. You can return to normal activities immediately.

Who Is A Candidate For Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is entirely non-invasive and non-ablative. It can be used on all skin colors and doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation, as more ablative procedures sometimes do. Just about everyone could use microdermabrasion at AesthetiSpa to brighten their complexion and improve their skin quality.

What to Expect From the Procedure

Before we begin the procedure, we clean your skin with a gentle cleansing gel. Our aesthetician slowly moves the diamond-tipped wand across your entire face, instantly vacuuming off the abraded dead skin cells.

The degree of exfoliation is determined by the amount of suction employed and the number of passes made over the skin. Because microdermabrasion only targets the superficial layer of the skin, topical numbing isn’t necessary.

The treatment takes from 20-30 minutes for the face. If you want to treat other areas, such as the neck, your session may last up to an hour.

Microdermabrasion Side Effects

Because we use DiamondTome microdermabrasion, which has natural diamond chips embedded in the tip, the already minimal risk involved with these treatments is lowered. Some people can react to the microscopic crystals that are sprayed across the facial skin, but we don’t use that method at AesthetiSpa.

You may have some light peeling and your skin may feel a little tight for a day or so, but a good moisturizer and sunscreen are all you need. There won’t be any crusting or downtime.

FAQs

Our microdermabrasion treatments are painless yet effective. The degree of exfoliation is controlled by a widely adjustable vacuum in conjunction with varying coarseness of wands. Because exfoliation occurs only as the wand is drawn across the skin, and no crystals are blasted against the skin, our system is regarded as gentler than others, even at the highest settings.

There isn’t much you need to do to prepare for these treatments.

Don’t use Retin-A or other exfoliators for 3-5 days before your treatment. As with most skin improvement services, it’s best to not have sun exposure or spray tans for at least a week before your session.

If you’ve had laser skin therapies or chemical peels, wait at least three weeks before having microdermabrasion. If you’ve been on Accutane, you’re not eligible for these treatments until you’ve been off of it for at least six months.

You can return to work or other regular activities immediately after your session. The only thing you can’t do is go out in the sun without protection.

There isn’t any recovery or downtime after a DiamondTome microdermabrasion session at AesthetiSpa. Remember, though, that removing the outer layer of your epidermis leaves your skin unprotected to a degree.

Be kind to your skin afterwards, as it will be a little sensitive with the top layer exfoliated. For the next week:

  • Don’t use harsh cleansers.
  • Don’t use a home exfoliator.
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Avoid prescription retinoid products.

Your skin may look slightly flushed immediately after the session, but it should return to normal in 10-30 minutes. Even after your first appointment, your skin will look and feel smoother and more youthful, and it will continue to improve with additional treatments.

The results from your microdermabrasion usually last about one month. That is the cycle for your skin to regenerate fully.

Many people notice an improvement in their skin's tone and texture after just one microdermabrasion session. However, a series of treatments is usually recommended for longer-lasting changes.

Most providers suggest starting with 4-6 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Deeper concerns like acne scars or sun damage may require additional appointments for more noticeable results.

It’s possible to get microdermabrasion even if you have sensitive skin, especially when your provider uses devices like DiamondTome, which are generally less abrasive. However, you should proceed carefully.

Some people with sensitive skin may experience more redness, irritation, or dryness after treatment. A consultation at AesthetiSpa can help determine if microdermabrasion is appropriate or if a gentler option would be better.

Yes, microdermabrasion is often combined with other treatments to boost results. Common pairings include:

  • Facials
  • Light chemical peels
  • LED therapy
  • Hydrating masks

Since microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and clears the skin’s surface, it can help other treatments penetrate more effectively. However, not every combination is appropriate for every skin type. Some services, like deeper chemical peels or laser therapies, might need to be scheduled separately to allow time for healing in between.

Generally, you should wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup after a microdermabrasion treatment. Your skin will be more sensitive and slightly red immediately afterward. Wearing makeup too soon can cause irritation or clog freshly exfoliated pores.

If you need to wear something for coverage, opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic mineral makeup, and be sure to use clean brushes or sponges. Keeping your skincare routine simple and hydrating during the first day or two helps your skin recover faster and maintain the benefits of the session.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that only exfoliates the outermost layer of skin without chemicals or deep penetration. Because of this, it is a gentle option for maintaining healthy skin during pregnancy.
