Scar Re-pigmentation is the use of permanent makeup, or micro-pigmentation, to introduce flesh colored pigment into a scar, to make it match the surrounding tissue and appear less noticeable.

Scar Re-pigmentation can be done with great advantage on facelift scars, surgical scars, scars from accidents, or melanoma and skin cancer removal.

Healed scar tissue is missing the natural pigments found in normal skin. This is called hypo-pigmention and makes the skin appear unnaturally white or colorless. To correct this, a wide variety of flesh tone permanent cosmetic pigments are used to closely match the surrounding skin.

Frequently Asked Questions for Scar Re-pigmentation

How many treatments does it take for Scar Re-pigmentation?
Scar Re-pigmentation generally requires 2 to 3 treatments. It is important to gradually build up the pigment to the desired coverage level and color with a 4 to 6 week period between treatments, to allow for skin cell turnover.

Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is done with topical numbing and is very comfortable.

What areas can be treated?
All body areas can be treated.

Does it work well on all scars?
Results are best for scars which are not overly raised, sunken, uneven or darker than the surrounding tissue. Color matching should be done when skin is not excessively tanned as the permanent pigment will not change color with tanning.

Is it permanent?
Scar Re-pigmentation, like all permanent makeup, is subject to slight fading over time and UV exposure, and may need to be touched up every few years.

What are the advantages of Scar Re-pigmentation?
As with permanent makeup, the color is sweat proof, water proof and smear proof unlike messy cosmetic cover-ups. Clients find they have renewed confidence and freedom when their scars are no longer noticeable.

How do I prepare for treatment?
Avoid alcohol for 2 days prior to treatment. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, blood thinners and Aleve for 5 days prior to treatment as these medications increase the risk of bleeding. Also, stop Vitamin E and fish oil 5 days prior to treatment. Keep sunscreen over the scar and surrounding area to avoid getting tanned so the pigment can be matched to your natural skin color.

What are the potential side effects of treatment?
Side effects are minimal and may include bleeding, bruising, and tenderness. These side effects are rare.

How do I care for the area after treatment?
It is important to keep the treated area moist with A&E ointment or Aquaphor for several days after treatment.
