IPL IPL stands for intense-pulsed light. IPL is used for sun-damaged skin, brown spots, redness, and uneven skin tones. This treatment is sometimes referred to as photorejuvenation. It is also used to increase collagen and improve acne scars when used in addition to the Laser Genesis treatment. IPL is effective for improving rosacea and treating small blood vessels commonly seen on the face. We utilize IPL systems that are exceptionally effective at treating pigment. There is no need to apply topical numbing cream beforehand, and you can realize superior results in just one or two treatments. Virtually any part of your body with sun spots or freckles can be safely treated.
How many treatments can I expect? It usually takes several treatments to get the desired results. In most cases it takes about 3 treatments to reach the desired results for sun spot reduction. If we are working to decrease facial redness or rosacea, it can take 6 or more treatments.
What does it feel like? You may feel a brief pinching sensation with each pulse, but it is usually very tolerable. Unlike most IPL lasers, no numbing creams are required. Occasionally, if we are working just to reduce pigment, we will pre-cool and post-cool an area with gel packs to help with the discomfort.
What can I expect after treatment? Usually within approximately 20 minutes you will see the treated spots become slightly darker. It can take up to 3 weeks for the discoloration to slough off, almost like little cookie crumbs coming to the surface of the skin. The treated area may have a slight sunburned sensation for a few days following the treatment. In some cases it may look like a superficial burn and in rare cases a blister may appear. It is very important to follow all post treatment instructions and remember that you will be much more sun sensitive for several days after the treatment. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection having an SPF of 30 or higher should be used on a daily basis after treatment.
How do I prepare for the treatments? We cannot treat tanned patients with IPL. Therefore, it is very important for you to stay out of the sun for 4 weeks prior to treatment or use a broad-spectrum sunblock, with an SPF of 30 or higher, on a daily basis for one month prior to treatment.
